SHARPS NEW MODEL 1863 CARBINE

#76101. Cal. 52 Percusion. Standard 22" Round barrel. A Transitional New Model 1863 Carbine. One of the early New Model 1863 carbines that were delivered with the patchbox in the buttstock. The finish was casehardened with a blued barrel. All metal parts have a "reblued" finish, the barrel including rear sight are grey brown orginal finish. The metal is primarily smooth with some scattered areas of pinpricking and light pitting here and there on the barrel and receiver and some scattered freckled patches of oxidized minor surface roughness on the frame and receiver. The automated Lawrence Pellet Priming System is intact. The carbine has seen a lot of use, was manufactured and delivered in early 1863 in the middle of the Civil War, hence its general condition. All markings are present and correct although some of them are hardly legible, like the "Sharp's Rifle Manufg.Co.Hartford, Conn. barrel address and "New Model 1863" marking on the barrel (see pictures). Patents and serial number are clear. So is the military acceptance stamp "M.T.G." below the sling bar. No military cartouches are visible on the stock under the sling bar or barrel. As would be expected the buttstock shows scattered bumps, dings, and mars as well. The forend is in much better condition. Mechanically perfect and has a very fine bore! A total of about 60.000 Model 1863 Carbines were manufactured, 20.000 with a patchbox and 40.000 without. The carbine appears to be 100% complete and correct. Overall, this is an attractive and solid example of a Transitional Sharps New Model 1863 Civil War Carbine.
