SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1870 ROLLING BLOCK U.S. NAVY RIFLE
#2433. Cal. 50-70 Gvt. CF. 32 5/8" Rnd. barrel. The barrel is grey brown the frame has no finish left. Both swivels are "U" marked. It has "U.S.N. SPRINGFIELD 1870", stamped on the frame and the correct Remington Patents of 1864 and 1868 on the upper tang. In 1870, the Navy department ordered 10.000 Rolling Block rifles. They were made by the Springfield Armory under license from the Remington Arms Cy. When it was "discovered" that the rear sight was placed 1/2" inch in front of the action and not 3 1/8" inch, it was a reason to condemn the rifles, except 2500 had been completed, had already been issued and were on board of Navy ships. Springfield eventually manufacted the 7500 "condemned" rifles to fulfill the order. They all went to France for the Franco-Prussian war. The rejected arms (as is this one!) do not bear an anchor or inspector marks. An intact unaltered example of a condemned rifle is quite scarce and much more rare than the accepted version by the Navy! This rifle is accompanied by its original Ames made navy bayonet, scabbard and a belt frog (#2290), with all the correct military inspector marks!! More reason to believe it was one of the 2500 (#2433!) condemned rifles that were delivered to the Navy. Mechanically perfect with a very fine bore. A very nice set!
