TINTYPE

A tintype, also known as a melainotype or ferrotype, is a photograph made by creating a direct positive on a thin sheet of metal coated with a dark lacquer or enamel and used as the support for the photographic emulsion. Tintypes enjoyed their widest use during the 1860s and 1870s, but lesser use of the medium persisted into the early 20th century. This one is the size known to collectors as a quarter plate image. It means that the image measures approximately 3.25 x 4.25 inches (8 x 11 cm). It presents a bearded civilian wearing a hat and overcoat, and could be a military vest underneath. He carries a gun that may be a Sharps Rifle or carbine metallic cartridge conversion type. The back of the tintype has a small label with following text; "Cold Mountain, Tin-Dense Beard Man" plus a serial number. The image comes in a beautiful gutta percha union case for display. The case design called "The Capture of Major André" is based on a painting by A; Durand (1796-1886) . The case was made by Peck and Halvorson, their names and patents of 1854 and 1855 are printed underneath the tintype. the die engraving was created by Frederick Goll and is signed twice by him directly under the center design. This type of case is scarce and highly prized by collectors. It is damaged on the upper left and has a small chip missing on the lower right corner. A deep amber colour velvet pad with an elegant arabesque device on the inner verso protects the tin photograph. The picture is framed with embossed, highly ornate, decorative gold foil with an oval viewing window. A very rare image in excellent condition in a scarce case!
