TINTYPE

A tintype, also known as a melainotype or ferrotype, is a photograph made by creating a direct positive on a thin sheet of metal coated with a dark lacquer or enamel and used as the support for the photographic emulsion. Tintypes enjoyed their widest use during the 1860s and 1870s, but lesser use of the medium persisted into the early 20th century. This one is the size known to collectors as the sixth plate image. It means that the image measures approximately 2 5/8 inches by 3 1/4 inch. Here is a picture of a Civil War soldier in uniform. Original hand tinting is still visible on all buttons of the vest. They have been lightly accented with gold enamel. The image is mounted in an embossed leather union case with a single latch closure. The case is in excellent condition. A "rare" cobalt blue velvet with a "C" scroll central motif , a scroll border containing a gothic trefoil in each corner on the inner verso protects the tin photograph. The picture is framed with embossed, highly ornate, decorative gold foil with an oval viewing window. It is also accompied by a bill of sale dated January 8, 1985 claiming the soldier in the picture is Private John Potter, 4th. New Hampshire Volunteers. Identified image in very fine condition!
