TINTYPE

A tintype, also known as a melainotype or ferrotype, is a photograph made by creating a direct positive on a thin sheet of metal coated with a dark lacquer or enamel and used as the support for the photographic emulsion. Tintypes enjoyed their widest use during the 1860s and 1870s, but lesser use of the medium persisted into the early 20th century. This one is the size known to collectors as the sixth plate image. It means that the image measures approximately 2 5/8 inches by 3 1/4 inch. Here is a picture of a Civil War era hunter armed with a percussion rifle with a long barrel. He wears a hat, has a scarf around his neck and a cartridge belt around his waist. Original hand tinting is still visible on the scarf and buckle of the ammunition belt, they have been lightly accented with gold enamel. His hand is resting on a deerskin. The image comes in a beautiful gutta percha union case for display. It is marked on the paper label inside by the maker Littlefield, Parsons & Co. They claim that they are "The sole proprietors and only Legal Manufacturers of the Union cases", it includes the Oct.1856 and April 1857 Patents. The gutta percha case itself is in excellent shape with the original felt. The outside design is an eagle holdng a banner marked "Constituation and the Laws" on the front and a floral design center on the back of the case. Excellent overall..
