AMBROTYPE

An ambrotype is an underexposed, underdeveloped, wet-collodion negative on glass that, when viewed with a dark background, appears as a positive image These ambrotype images are done by applying the image emulsion onto a ruby colored glass plate which makes them clear but fragile. Ambrotypes first came into use in the early 1850s. This one is the size known to collectors as the sixth plate image. It means that the image measures approximately 2 5/8 inches by 3 1/4 inch. Here is an original ambrotype image of a Union soldier from the Civil War. It shows a stern looking Yankee soldier on a chair. He wears a frock style uniform coat with chevrons on his sleeves. Original hand tinting is still visible. The buttons of the jacket, the belt buckle and badge on the forage cap have been lightly accented with gold enamel. The image comes in a beautiful gutta percha union case for display. It is marked on the paper label inside by the maker Littlefield, Parsons & Co. They claim that they are "The sole proprietors and only Legal Manufacturers of the Union cases", it includes the Oct.1856 and April 1857 Patents. The gutta percha case itself is in excellent shape with an embossed rose velvet pad with central sprig of flowers and a scroll border on the inner verso side of the case protecting the glass image. The outside design is an eagle holdng a banner marked "Constituation and the Laws" on both sides of the case. Excellent overall, a great Civil War collector's item.
