U.S. PATTERN 1851 ENLISTED CAVALRY SABRE BELT
Military belt with front and back sabre strap (both straps would loop through the suspension rings on the trooper’s scabbard), it also has the shoulder strap. Made in black bridle leather. The buckle is the Pattern 1851 with a silver wreath. Included is also the sabre hook to attach the sword when dismounted. The belt has the manufacturer"s stamp; " HOOVER, CALHOUN & Co."( Hoover and Calhoun & Co.from New-York had an Army contract that started in 1864 for Cavalry Cartridge Boxes, Saber Belts and Belt Plates, Holsters and other Cavalry Equipment ). There is also an Inspector's Initial "N" stamped on the belt under the two rivets of the hasp. The bridle leather sabre belt and accoutrements served in the Civil War. As such not many have survived. A Very desirable set made during the Civil War. Fine condition.
